Honestly, if you look and early episodes of the programs (before they became very stale and repetitive) they were eye-opening for many viewers. Yes it all seems bland and white now, but when TV was new, it was thrilling to have musical acts or comedy in your living room regularly. Arthur Godfrey, Ed Sullivan, Your Hit Parade, Sid Ceasar, Milton Berle and Lawrence Welk and others (read about Steve Allen's original Tonight Show) made it possible to have fresh programming available on a weekly basis. For some of the younger visitors to DL, this is the kind of show that filled air time when TV was new and each network tried to fill hour after hour with programming.
